La Carrera Panamericana 2008

October 24 - 30, 2008

The fire on the Carrera in 2006 ended our attempts to try for a class win but I am happy to say that the Lincoln crossed the finish line and was ranked 45th.

The fire enabled us to do a search of all the available sources to see if we could find the original livery. As raced in 2006, the livery was a copy of the colors used by Johnny Mantz, who finished 8th in 1950. This was done by the first restorer, Charlie Marshall. Photos from 1950 in color are rare, so that seemed a fair solution at the time.

Car 54 is shown from above in some group shots, so we know the number was painted on the roof (to enable spotting from the air). We also know she had three-tones, and red, white and blue was the common theme for this first race. The one detail we cannot seem to find is the air horn. The mounting brackets are there, still, and so is the air compressor. But no-one today seems to know what horns were used.
